Between work, family and extracurricular activities, the fast pace of life often causes our focus to drift away from the things that are important. Maintaining a healthy diet is one of the most important aspects of our lives. It’s easy for us to fall into the traps of consuming foods that have no nutritional value. When it comes to traveling, it’s easy for us to make a quick pit stop at a gas station to pick up a bag of chips and a soda.

Or head to the local fast food restaurant to get a burger and fries. Instead try these healthy snacks:

1. Healthy homemade trail mix
Having a busy life doesn’t mean you have to consume foods that are detrimental to your health. Snacks such as trail mix can be filling, tasty and highly nutritional. If you’re ever in doubt about the ingredients of store-bought or conventional trail mix, you can actually make your own. A combination of sunflower seeds, a variety of mixed nuts, raisins or dried cranberries and dark chocolate can make a delicious and healthy trail mix that you can enjoy while traveling.

2. Granola poppers
Granola poppers are a unique take on the traditional granola bars. You can make them your way with your own ingredients by combining peanut butter, honey, coconut oil and adding vanilla and salt to taste. Normally, if you wanted to make granola bars you would simply press all of the ingredients together into a flat cookie sheet, cut them into square sections and chill them until they’re solid. Granola poppers, however, allow you to turn these healthy snacks into cute little balls that you can eat while you’re on-the-go. They are just as tasty and are much cuter than a plain old square.

3. Spicy sweet potato chips
This is a unique take on the traditional potato chips and there is nothing more divine than the flavors of sweet and spicy chips. Here’s the catch with these chips, they’re super healthy. By slicing your sweet potatoes into thin layers and laying them in a pan of moderately hot olive oil, you are starting the process of making some nice sweet potato chips. After they are crisp, you can customize them with your favorite spices. For the sweet factor you can add a drizzle of honey and pare that with a small dash of cayenne pepper to add some heat.

4. Fruity treats
There’s nothing like a nice piece of fruit. After all the saying goes, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Fruits like apple, oranges or grapes are delicious, healthy and are great portable snacks. If you like a fancier take on fruit, you could consider making customized fruit cups. You can select your favorite fruits and cut them into small pieces. Placing them into small sized tupperware containers would be a great snack while traveling. These personalized fruit cups are also excellent snacks while at work or sitting at home chilling with the family.
