Superfoods to Reduce Prostate Cancer Risk
Prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer among men over the age of 65. In rarer cases it attacks women (via the glands and ducts at the front of the vagina or Skene glands, which are referred to as the female prostate). Symptoms of prostate cancer may include trouble urinating and pain in the pelvic region, and issues with erectile dysfunction. Traditional treatments for prostate cancer include radiation and prostatectomy surgery.
However, certain foods may help reduce the risk of advanced prostate cancer and prevent the disease altogethers. Here are five of the most popular cruciferous vegetables that help reduce overall prostate cancer risk:
1. Broccoli
Among the foods that slow prostate cancer growth is broccoli. Broccoli can be prepared in a variety of ways. It can be mixed with eggs for an omelet at breakfast, and it can be served steamed as a lunch-time side. At dinner, it is a great food choice to incorporate into casseroles. It is also convenient to have handy for afternoon snacking.
2. Brussel sprouts
Kids for some reason have traditionally hated them. But brussel sprouts are loaded with flavor. They are very easy to prepare. They can be tossed with olive oil, black pepper, and sea salt. Add some small cut up pieces of bacon for protein and lock in more of the aforementioned seasonings. They are also great boiled and served with hot sauce.
3. Cabbage
Across the world, food lovers turn to cabbage as it can be prepared and enjoyed raw, steamed and sauteed – three of the most popular methods. When eating it raw it is most commonly used in slaws. Add it to tacos or hot dogs. Steaming this vegetable is enjoyable when used as a side for a modest serving of pork. If trying to saute cabbage combine it with other traditional stir-fry ingredients. Various colors of the vegetable give way to varying levels of sweetness.
4. Cauliflower
Cauliflower has become even more popular. Traditionally steamed or used in casseroles, this white or pearl-colored vegetable has a nut-like taste. It is also delicious when roasted and served with a glass of wine. If trying to feed an entire family, consider mashing them and whipping them up with a bit of butter to create a side similar to whipped potatoes. It also tastes great when combined with fellow superfood, broccoli.
5. Arugula
Arugula is a great choice for anyone that likes to eat salad. It tastes wonderful with lean protein like chicken. And it is great with wild berries or sweet pairs. Add a little salt, black pepper, and lemon juice, too. Arugula is a great foundation for a starter salad or entree salad. Top the salad off with feta cheese and toasted pecans or walnuts.
