Prepackaged Snacks for Diabetics
People who have diabetes sometimes have blood sugar spikes due to eating the wrong foods, or foods that are high in carbohydrates. They enjoy snacking, but often times find it difficult to have snack foods that are specifically for diabetics already at home. Trying to stick to a diabetic diet can seem virtually impossible at times especially when they get hungry in between meals. Today, diabetics can have prepackaged snacks that are made of no sugar and very little carbs.
Even though these snack foods are readily available in stores, there are some foods in the home that are perfect for the diabetic:
1. Apples and nut butter
Apples are a great snack all by themselves, but when they are coupled with a nut butter, they are even more scrumptious. Slice an apple and add to the plate some peanut butter or other nut butter for a savory snack any time of the day. Apples are rich in B and C vitamins, and peanut butter provides vitamin E.
2. Vegetables and hummus
Hummus is a creamy spread that is made from chickpeas. It is a great tasting snack when it is paired with raw vegetables. Both of these foods are good sources of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. The hummus also provides protein, and the properties may help with blood sugar control in diabetics. Try several different veggies like broccoli, bell pepper, cauliflower, and carrots to experience flavors that the taste buds will surely enjoy.
3. Yogurt with berries
For a great tasting diabetic friendly snack, try yogurt with blueberries, strawberries, or blackberries. The antioxidants found in berries can reduce damage to the cells of the pancreas. This is the organ that releases hormones that can lower blood sugar. They also reduce inflammation. Berries are also good sources of fiber. A one cup serving of blueberries can provide four grams of fiber which can help stabilize the blood sugar levels.
4. Hard boiled eggs
For a super healthy diabetic snack, eat hard boiled eggs. They are full of protein with six grams in one egg. Hard boiled eggs keep the blood sugar from rising too high after eating. The long term measure of blood sugar levels is the hemoglobin A1C, and hard boiled eggs help lower this. These are great in a sugar free diet.
5. Avocados
For people with diabetes, eating avocado may help you manage your blood sugar levels. They are high in monounsaturated fatty acids and fiber. The contents of the avocado may help keep the blood sugar levels from spiking after eating. Over time if eaten regularly, avocados can help significantly improve blood sugar levels.
Many diabetics are in control of the blood sugar levels with the help of insulin shots and a sensible diet. Eating properly can also help reduce the amount of insulin taken. Stay with a diet that is low in carbohydrates and sugar in order to maintain better control of your diabetes. Avoid all of the sugary drinks, and opt for drinks of water instead.
