Home Remedies for Migraine

Migraine is a neurological condition that is characterized by intense and unbearable headaches caused by a variety of reasons (i.e., weather, fragrance or chemical smells, food, and pollution, etc.). Migraines typically affect one half of the head, and pulsate for between an hour to up to 3 days. Symptoms of migraine may include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, sound, or smell. Here are some home remedies to treat and prevent migraines:

1. Diet
Your food plays a huge role in the occurrence of migraines. To prevent it, avoid the following food and beverages:

  • Food containing nitrates – hot dogs, bacon, sausages
  • Chocolate
  • Dried fruits
  • Dairy products that are cultures such as curd, buttermilk, etc
  • Beans and sprouts
  • processed and pickled food
  • Cold food like ice cream and iced beverages
  • Alcohol
  • Cheese, especially the types containing tyramine
  • Food containing MSG as an enhancer
  • Caffeine

It is best to find out what works for you and what does not and draw up a diet chart to maintain good health and prevent migraines.

2. Aromatherapy
Try using certain essential oils to ease the pain caused by migraines. You can inhale it directly or you can dilute it with carrier oil or water and apply it on your forehead. Among all the essential oils, lavender and peppermint oil seem to work best for migraines.

3. Acupuncture
This is the method of applying pressure on your body at specific points to relieve pain and reduce stress. Chronic headaches and migraines can be treated by this method.

4. Ginger
Ginger can ease nausea caused by the pain of migraines. It can also decrease the severity of the migraine as well as its duration.

5. Yoga
If you get migraines often, make yoga a regular part of your life. Yoga has other benefits as well. Yoga is thought to reduce anxiety, tension and the frequency and intensity of migraines.

6. Magnesium
Add magnesium to your diet since the deficiency of magnesium is related to many head related ailments. Consuming magnesium can reduce menstrual-related headaches and migraines. Foods that include magnesium are:

  • Oatmeal
  • Sesame and sunflower seeds
  • Cashews

7. Stress management
Stress is a leading cause of headaches and an easy trigger for migraines. It also acts in a cycle as stress causes migraine which causes further stress, which in turn intensifies the symptoms of migraine and so on. Use stress-relief methods such as yoga, meditation, and exercise to keep your mental health intact and reduce the occurrence of migraines. You can also book a stress management class, listen to soothing music, or take a warm bath.

8. Hydration
Water is the solution to almost every minor problem in your body. All it takes is a little dehydration to trigger a migraine and ruin the rest of your day. It’s advisable to drink water at regular intervals to not trigger any migraines.

9. Compress
Place a cold or warm compress on your forehead. This can be soothing and give you relaxation. Cold compress works better than warm compresses. People with diabetes, skin issues, and circulatory problems should avoid extreme temperatures. Consult a doctor before you use this method.
