Foods that Help Manage Lymphoma
The role of diet in the treatment of diseases is well established. Lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymph nodes, can be effectively managed by following a proper diet and including the foods mentioned in this article. Patients undergoing lymphoma treatment in particular, require more protein than usual to help their cells heal during and after treatment (i.e., chemotherapy, radiation, etc.). Given below is a list of foods that help in managing lymphoma:
1. Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are the best foods that help manage lymphoma. They have a variety of nutrients, including vitamins and minerals that are good for health. They help boost immunity and can help the body fight infections. Colorful fruits and vegetables should be preferred as they have anthocyanin that helps fight free radicals and protects cells from cancer. They include red peppers, grapes, cherries, tomatoes, beets, blueberries, apples, watermelon, and carrots. Five portions of fruits and vegetables are recommended. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, kale, radish, and cauliflower are good for those suffering from lymphoma. At least one such vegetable must be included in the diet.
2. Whole grains
Whole grains are good as they are rich in fiber that helps digestion. They are a source of low carbs that are beneficial for the body. Whole wheat bread, brown rice, oat bran, whole grain pasta are foods that can be included in one’s diet.
3. Foods containing unsaturated fat
All fatty foods are not bad, one must eat food that has unsaturated fat or healthy fat. This includes avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. Foods rich in saturated fat like butter, processed foods, and pastries must be strictly avoided.
4. Water
Lymphoma patients tend to get dehydrated fast, as a side effect of medication. Drinking plenty of water is recommended for those who have lymphoma. A minimum of 1.2 liters of water or eight glasses is a must every day. More water helps the body to be hydrated and also helps to flush toxins from the body.
5. Probiotics
Probiotics are food products that have good bacteria in them, with yogurt being a classic example. These help in the process of digestion and are beneficial for the body. They help in boosting the immunity of the body. They also fight bad bacteria, keeping it under control. Kefir, tempeh, sauerkraut, and miso are other foods that have probiotics.
4. Protein
Protein helps repair cells damaged by lymphoma. Less animal protein and more plant protein must be consumed. Red meat should be avoided and lean meat should be consumed. Fish, especially salmon, mackerel, and tuna that has Omega-3, must be consumed. Nuts, lentils, milk, and beans can be included in the diet to get sufficient protein.
5. Dairy products
Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt are good for the body as they have protein. However, they have more fat that can cause problems. Hence, it is recommended to use low-fat milk and milk products that are low in fat. Those allergic to milk products can consider using soy milk products.
